Krissy's Chalkboard Dresser

Posted by T'onna Peters | Sunday, July 27, 2014 Categories: ,

Yesterday my little family and I went to some local antique stores. We were on the hunt for a dresser for Krissy's room and a bookshelf (preferably a boat shelf) for the living room. Krissy will be three next month, and she still had a dresser/changing table in her room. That thing annoyed me because we purchased it from Wal-Mart (so it's not real wood), and the bottoms of the drawers kept coming apart. In order to open the middle drawer, we have to open the bottom drawer, and they both slide out together. I am holding on to this dresser/changing table to use in our son's nursery, but once he's too old for the changing table, he'll get a new dresser as well. Anyhoo, I was happy when we found this sturdy, white dresser, but I was unsure about the veneer popping off the side. The store owner suggested that I just pop it off and paint over it, so that's what I did.

I knew I wanted to use chalkboard paint, but I felt that black chalkboard paint alone would be too dark for a little girl's room. At first, I considered painting the drawers with the chalkboard paint and the rest of the dresser pink. But then I imagined a large Pepto pink dresser, and that didn't appeal to me. So I noticed that the drawers have squares and rectangles on them. I decided to paint those squares and rectangles with the colors pink, green, and tan to match the ladybug paintings I made for her nursery that matched her crib bedding.

I painted this dress on a blanket in my living/dining room.

We slid the dresser/changing table into her closet. I think it looks cool in there.

Of course, I had to write on it! I labeled the drawers.

I love the handles on the drawers. They're one reason I fell in love with this dresser.

So here's a before and after pic. What do you think?

Oh, I almost forgot to share a pic of the "shelf" we bought. It's actually a hutch. It's painted black, and it's fine for now, but whoever painted it, got lint and stuff trapped in the paint. I'll probably fix that later...
It's holding most of our DVD collection. I know one of the teacup planters has yarn and the other doesn't. I actually want to put something else decorative in them. I'll get to it eventually.
